Dragon’s Teeth (The Lanny Budd Novels) by Upton Sinclair (2 star ratings)
So then it becameand they were scrambling. Pulitzer – This book is a real tough one for me to rate. I neither loved nor hated this book but never really got into it. When you read a book that you like you get into a rhythm with the author and their writing style. I never felt like I got into that rhythm with Sinclair. I found myself reading a couple of pages and then realizing I hadn’t read them well.
The book takes place from to or so and really is about the rise of power in Germany of Hitler and the Third Reich. Hitler, Pulitzer – This book is a real tough one for me to rate. Hitler, Goering and Goebbels appear in the novel and interact with the main character, Lanny Budd.
From an historic standpoint the book is important to read but Sinclair’s style made it tough for me. The first half sets the stage of the Budd family their associates business partners as they interact with the new German government. Additionally Sinclair has a habit of describing people with Adjectives. If this is indicative of his writing I doubt I’ll pick up his other books. Writing this October I realize that they had telegrams and took trains – transportation and communication weren’t instantaneous – so perhaps that’s why the rise of fascism seems so matter-of-fact, as if it were just a new government to be bought off.
I found the book boring Writing this October I found the book boring and tedious; BTW, I didn’t read the entire Lanny Budd series, just this one, which is 3 in the series, so I’m sure I missed some key character points from previous works in this series.

This scene and the following few hold little uptno no character development, besides what one has learned from their third person omniscient standpoint, and vientes scenes are relatively boring and consist of family life, money talk, and private yachts.
The clearly wealthy patriarch of the Hansi family, Johannas, gives every last penny of his siclair to be set free, only to later be killed drzgon the Nazis and get Lanny arrested, tortured, and interrogated. While certain parts of the book were wittily written and contained slight suspense, as a whole it utilized the overused storyline portraying a brave, handsome hero Lanny who not only saves the day but also his damsel in distress Irma.
She is depicted as shallow and mindless, possibly due to the wealth she inherited from her family and thus the lack of any knowledge in consideration to real world problems. Alexander, Caesar, Attila, Genghis Khan, Napoleon—another such as these, diente in the age of electricity, of dientse presses and radio, when nine men out of ten would have said it was impossible. A world conqueror has to be a man of few ideas, and those fixed; a peculiar combination of exactly the right qualities, both good and bad—iron determination, irresistible energy, and no scruples of dragoon sort.
He has to know what he wants, and permit no obstacle to stand in the way of his getting it. He has to understand the minds of other men, both foes and friends, and what greeds, fears, hates, jealousies will move them to action. He must understand the mass mind, the ideals or delusions which sway it; he must be enough of a fanatic to talk their language, though not enough to be controlled by it.
He must believe in nothing but his own destiny, the glorified image of oos on the screen of history; whole races of mankind made over in his own image and according to his will. To accomplish that purpose he must be liar, thief, and murderer upon a world-wide scale; he must be ready without hesitation to commit every crime his own interest commands, whether upon individuals or nations.
