He forgets that the real power is with the Rougons. The descent into madness seemed a bit rapid for me but this is a quibble. Such women were indeed created by the Catholic Church, but never such a woman as Mme Mouret.
Francois is slightly compulsive in his behaviour and Marthe clearly suffers from some sort of mental illnesswhich Zola intended to portray as a genetic consequence of the Rougon-Macquart family’s tangled ancestry. The psychologies here are harrowing and bleak.
While there might not be any huge surprises, I wasn’t able to see the turns of plot in the las I do so like Zola – might even be 5 stars, but I feel I have to leave some room in the ratings for even better reads.

I did not start them in order: This novel reads like something Hannibal Lechter would have written if he had become a man of the cloth, or at least eaten one. Will this one be better? The hypocrisy of the clergy, social status, vicious gossip and the descent into madness and its consequences are just a few of the themes that drive this tale of human d and ambition. I’ve never had difficulty in suspending my disbelief in literature, for the sake of a good story, but this one, for some reason stretches the very bounds of cockeyed credulity.

This story concerns a priest with a murky past and murkier present who moves to Plassans genetic seat of the eponymous families of conquette series and becomes a boarder with a certain family.
I even read it in French for a while, thinking that the translator had dropped the ball on this one, as often happens with Zola. Who was this Abbe Faujas and what were his goals?
Can someone please provide a definitive and realistic reading order for reading the Les Rougon Macquart series?
