I was turned to this by reading the booj, The Tiger, By Jon Vaillant, which is an excellent chronicling of hunting a man-eating tiger in the Taiga. The encounters with tigers, seals, and just Arsenyev’s encyclopedic knowledge of flora and fauna makes this a great story about nature, about friendship, and about what is lost when progress takes over.

This is a great historical travelogue, a well born Russian officer exploring far eastern Siberia with a guide named Dersu. As a parting gift, Arseniev gives him a new rifle. No wonder the natives respected the hell out of nature. Each expedition is beset with hardship and danger: I received this book in my book group’s paperback swap and found it to be surprisingly readable, given my general preference for fiction, women writers, and more contemporary titles.

Now I know that I must see the Kurosawa movie. During our meal I threw a bit of meat into the fire. Captain Arseniev decides to take Dersu with him to the city of Khabarovsk. I think it might be one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. Written in the 19th C. I’m so grateful to have met this book and to have been able to read it in this way. As a Star Wars fan, I chalk that up to happy coincidence.

There are also some sad passages about the terribly abused native peoples that Arseniev passes in his wilderness treks, shocking until you remember that all native peoples around the world have had the same cruel existence at the hands of invading “civilized” groups.
