This question contains spoilers… view spoiler [Why did Nina try and kill Willi and Melanie in the first place? Nevertheless, it was a great book, intricately planned with awesome characters.

Preview — Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons. There are some depraved scenes in the book, very violent and I am not caarrion to what purpose it was for.

Carrion Comfort

Oh my friends, this was something special. Clocking in at pages, it isn’t the longest I have read, either. Another huge letdown was the lack of horror. I think you see my issue. A huge firefight erupts as Natalie and Gentry marshall the gang forces against the ” voodoo woman” who killed their comrades against those she controls, while the FBI adds to the violence in an attempt to flush out either Willi or Melanie, as well as kill Gentry and Natalie for knowing too much.

The horror is not in your face here, but takes a backseat to more action and suspense than I expected.

Humanity has this potential. What makes it different from almost all other vampire ficton is his approach to the subject.

I was not expecting that. To see what your friends thought of this book, please sign up.

The WW2 pieces are seen in retrospect, and are certainly the best part of the novel; the obsession with chess that some characters have couldn’t have been used in a better way. There were horror tropes, sure, but there was very little that was horrifying.

But this story would be simmns without the anti heroes-the enemies-the villains. Simmons sets a stage of believability by referencing a number of horrific events such as the Kennedy and Lennon assassinations and weaves a network of conspiracies and chess moves, the latter being a tantalizing motif throughout, that pulls this story way beyond the normal horror novel.

Despite the relatively few number of books he’s written he’s not someone to watch out for, he’s someone who is co,fort here.

Garlic, crucifixes and holy water are completely useless against them. Sweet baby Tom Cruise, I wish to fuck I was kidding. I loved his concept for Carrion Comfort and the way he executed this on the page. Saul believes the people they are hunting have the same powers he witnessed in Comtort Germany. This is carriln horror of Carrion Comfort. Maybe it is due to having read King’s newest while I read this one. I am a huge mystery fan, and Simmons certainly sated that need as cmfort as I am concerned. Saul will pose as one of the runaways used as human pawns in the island games, being brought there by Tony Harod as instructed after his interrogation.

The many, many chapters leading up to it are full of slaughter, philosophical discussion, bureaucratic bumbling and spy-versus-spy stuff Gordon Liddy with fangs and Mossad meets Mephistopheles ddan German accents —all of it improbable in the extreme, but in very good fun.

In a perfect world, a reader will never feel like skimming, but we all know that even the best novels can have unneeded information This, in the realm of fiction, is called pacing. Most of all Simmons is a story-teller, and has proved it both in the fields of hard science fiction and horror. Saul becomes a willing pawn in the “game,” having trained himself with self-hypnosis for months to memorize as many details as possible of the lives of death camp victims and survivors of the holocaust so that carrioon Willi attempts to control him, the memories of others will confuse Willi in a way that will gain Saul a few seconds to attack and kill the old man.

I love the concept of Drood and probably should have started there.

Carrion Comfort boasts some of the dqn despicable c This book should come with a warning label, although that might ruin its amazing cover.

Dan’s first published story appeared on Feb.

There’s lots of places where the novel easily deserves a 5 star, just on reflection, alone, and since this came out nearly 30 years ago I’m not going to fuss too much over spoilers. While it shouldn’t have been so jarring, it most certainly was.

This was a great and cooling summer read for me. This scythe-wielding baddie is turned into a joke shortly after his introduction, and he never reclaims his rightful spot as scary. Carrion Comfort is a huge, epic novel. The story is very well done, but there were a few problems I had with it. Carrion Comfort is a brilliant example of just how good horror fiction can be. If the can was a person, it would have a punchable face. This doesn’t take away from dna enjoyment of the book, but it could have done comfrot some serious editing.

As Natalie and Gentry investigate, the Island Club uses a bus full of carrionn to attack them—and they flee to the safety of the gang since no authorities arrive to help. Dan Simmons can write a great book no matter what genre he is writing in. It’s huge, over pages, and dates back from Nazi Germany to present day. For me, it could have lost about pages. Everyone’s character was perfect for Carrion Comfort. I especially don’t really enjoy “action” scenes where people are just running around for ages and hiding in different locations – this kind of thing is great for the big screen, but can be hard to follow when reading.

Saul and Natalie escape wounded but alive, heal, and get help from the Mossad revealing some but not all information about the Island Club. In this particular work Simmons tackles on one of the most famous horror creatures – the vampire.
