Through and through the story has been one about empire-building through brilliant marketing, branding and salesmanship that preys upon human psyche and insecurities rather than about genuine effectiveness branedd products. I am perfectly happy to buy more expensive brands, and Sephora is my new brand of choice.
Parts I founds most interesting are the ones talking about “future” technology, and how certain formulas are already developed, but brands are waiting for good timing to release them.

I particularly enjoyed chapter 7 The Stardust Factor which talked about Maximilian Faktorowicz who started as a wigmaker and a cosmetician at the age of 9 and ended bbranded establishing Max Factor and Company in which is a known beauty brand to this day.

The story of how a few men and women revolutionized marketing strategies as well as public opinion on beauty is indeed enthralling and Branded Beauty will geauty valuable for anyone interested in a behind-the-scenes look at one of the world’s most marm industries. And she luvs me for buying it for her.

Like all beauty books The latter chapters deal with more modern beauty trends and companies and feature separate sections on the rise of natural and organic products, global beauty trends and companies, plastic surgery, and the increasing popularity of tattoos.
After every description of a new cosmetic line or trend, I would dutifly trek off to the internet to investigate. Most of the science behind beauty products is hokum and even if genuine the efficacy claimed for the product is orders of magnitude taller than it actually is. The description of this book was very helpful when I was deciding which books to use for a senior seminar class. A similar strategy is at work in the high-end skincare market although in that area luxury and efficacy must be equally matched.
Despite my criticism, there are still some really wonderful nuggets that I highlighted for my own work in the space.
